FAQs

AI tattoo design questions, answered

The questions people ask most before, during and after designing a tattoo with TattooBuild. If yours isn't here, contact us.

01

Working with your tattoo artist

Can I take an AI tattoo design to my artist?

Yes. That's what TattooBuild is built for. Bring the design sheet and the stencil as a clear brief rather than a finished drawing. A good artist will adjust the size, line spacing and flow for your body, and will often redraw it in their own hand. Some artists would rather not work from AI designs at all, so ask when you book. If they'd prefer to start fresh, your designs still make an excellent mood board.

Will my artist charge to redraw it?

Usually, yes. Most artists charge for custom drawing time or build it into the price of the tattoo. It's skilled work, and it's the step that makes a design tattooable. How much do tattoo designs cost?

Can I use the stencil version as the actual stencil?

Treat it as a clean line-art guide, not a transfer ready for your skin. Your artist will size it, fit it to your body and print the real stencil on their own equipment. The stencil version shows them the linework clearly, which is what makes it useful.

Designing

Colour or black and grey: which should I choose?

Black and grey suits almost every style, ages gracefully and is simpler to touch up. Colour brings watercolour, neo-traditional and illustrative work to life, but it fades faster in the sun and heals differently on every skin tone. Make both versions in the studio and compare them side by side, then ask your artist which colours will hold up on your skin.

How does placement change the design?

Placement sets the shape of the canvas. A forearm design comes out tall and narrow, a chest piece wide, a wrist piece compact and open, so the composition suits the spot from the start. Placement also decides how much detail a tattoo can hold and how much it'll hurt. Tattoo pain chart

Is my design unique?

Every design is generated fresh from your words and settings. It isn't pulled from a library or a catalogue of other people's tattoos. Similar prompts can produce similar results, though, so we don't promise no one will ever make something close. The details you add, and your artist's hand, are what make it yours.

What's the difference between Fast and Detail?

Fast is for exploring: quick results so you can try lots of directions. Detail is slower and more careful, for when you've found the idea and want fine shading, dotwork gradients or dense backgrounds right.

Why did the studio refuse my idea?

Our content filters, and those of our image model, block some requests, such as sexual content, graphic violence and hate symbols. Now and then they block something harmless by mistake, and rewording usually fixes it. If you think a refusal was wrong, tell us.

03

Ownership and privacy

Who owns the designs I make?

You keep the rights you have in your ideas and in the designs the studio makes for you, and you can use them for any lawful purpose, including getting them tattooed. One honest caveat: the law on AI-generated images is still developing, and in some countries images made entirely by AI may not be protected by copyright, so we can't promise no one will ever make something similar. What happens to the photos I upload?

They're used only to make the design or skin mockup you asked for. We don't keep the photo: it's sent once to our image model provider to make the image, then discarded. The mockup itself is private to your account and can never be made public. Please don't upload photos of other people without their permission, or of anyone under 18. Privacy policy

Are my designs public?

You choose, design by design. Public designs appear in Explore on their own page, which anyone can see and search engines can index. Private designs are visible only to you. Anything made from a photo you've uploaded of yourself stays private.

How accurate is the skin try-on?

It's good for size, position and how a design follows the shape of a limb. It can't show how the tattoo will look once healed, exactly how colour will settle in your skin, or how it moves when you do. Your artist will place the stencil on you in person, and that's the real test. Try-on tips

Plans and your account

Can I try it without paying?

Yes. Your first 2 designs need no account and no card.

How many designs do I get, and what counts as one?

That depends on your plan: 40, 80 or 140 a month, or 160 or 280 for the year. Each image the studio draws counts as one design. Downloading and sharing don't. Full details

How do I sign in?

Enter your email and we'll send you a one-tap sign-in link, or use your password if you set one. If you had an account on the old TattooBuild app, your email and password still work.

Can I get a refund?

You can cancel any time and your plan runs to the end of the period you've paid for. Because each design is made for you on the spot, payments aren't refundable once you've started using a billing period, but we will refund you if a fault on our side meant you couldn't get your designs, or if you were charged in error.
